Bio

Dr. Salim Chahine was appointed Third Vice-Governor of Banque Du Liban (Central Bank of Lebanon) on June 10, 2020. Accordingly, he is a member of the Central Council of the Bank.

Dr. Chahine started his career 25 years ago as a financial analyst in the pipeline/oil industry in Europe. Afterward, he worked as a consultant for several financial institutions in Europe, North Africa, the GCC, and Lebanon.

He also held several positions in the banking sector:

  • Financial Economist Advisor, in charge of Asset Management and Private Banking in Banque BEMO Lebanon and Banque BEMO Europe for 17 years till 2017. Investment Committee member and Equity Capital Committee member in BEMO Europe;
  • Independent Board Member, Chair of the Compliance Committee, Corporate Governance Committee member, and invited member to the Risk Committee at Bankmed from September 2017 till June 2020;
  • Independent Board Member, Chair of the Audit Committee, Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee, and Compensation Committee member at Turkland Bank from March 2018 till June 2020.

In the academic field, Dr. Chahine was the «Abdul Aziz Al Sagar Endowed Chair Professor» of Finance at the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He was the founding Executive Director of the Talal and Madiha Zein AUB – Innovation Park. He served as Interim Dean of the Olayan School of Business – AUB from April 2013 to December 2015. He is a member of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He was also a visiting scholar in several universities including the «Johnson School Cornell University», the «Neely School of Business – Texas Christian University», «King’s College London», and «EADA» – Spain.

Dr. Chahine has developed a solid research portfolio in Business and Finance. He has more than 50 publications in top academic journals such as Review of Accounting Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Corporate Finance ... His research was presented in leading international conferences such as the National Bureau of Economic Research in the US, the American Finance Association, the European Finance Association, and the European Financial Management Association. He received several research awards such as the A.H. Shoman Foundation Award for the Best Young Arab Researcher in Economics, Banking, Financial, and Management Sciences. He also received an Excellence Medal for Distinguished Scholarship Fellow given by late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Dr. Chahine was awarded the 2020 Kuwait Prize in the field of economics and social sciences (area of administrative, financial, and banking sciences) by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).

Dr. Chahine holds a Ph.D. in Finance from «Aix-Marseille University» – France, and two MSc in Financial Engineering from «Kedge Business School» – Marseille and in Banking and Finance from «Aix-Marseille University», in addition to Executive Education Program certificates from «Harvard Business School» and the «New York University – Stern School of Business».
